How To Write A Cover Letter

Cover letters are basically everyones’ worst enemy, including hiring managers (and mine), but they’re (unfortunately) still common practice. The reasoning behind them is usually for employers to get a grasp on your writing skills, to see some reasons you’re interested in the position, and as an effort-based gatekeeper—as in, it weeds out people who aren’t really interested in the position, because if they’re not, they won’t put in the effort to write a cover letter. Despite these terrible aspects, they’re still needed most of the time, so here’s an easy template to write a cover letter.

Here’s Molly’s version of this cover letter, which she wrote for a job she applied to at Sephora last fall. We know it can feel sort of fake and is absolutely annoying to do. But once you get the hang of it, it’s just a matter of filling in the right words and putting in the effort!
